It has been reported that college students in America college students spend on average 9 hours a day on their smartphones. The 2016 Ofcom report found that in the UK we now spend more time on electronic media (8hrs 45mins) than we do on sleep (8hrs 18mins)! Young adults use their smart phones for 5 hours a day which equates to about 20 years over a lifetime!
The 2016 Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC) in partnership with Digital Awareness UK (DAUK) and Deloitte surveys reported that two thirds of students say that using their mobile devices at night affects their schoolwork. They also reported that one quarter of students say they feel tired during the day because of how often they use their mobile phone at night.
I frequently see teenagers referred to my clinic complaining of chronic fatigue, daytime sleepiness, pain and headaches.
